The Blue Lakes project started on the 1st of October 2019 and concluded at the end of September 2023 (officially the 26th of September on occasion of the project’s Final Conference). The partnership includes five Italian and two German partners. The project foresaw the implementations of three preparatory actions (A.1, A.2 and A.3) which were both concluded within the second year of the project without particular problems and seven core actions (actions B.1 – B.7), two actions devoted at the monitoring of the project impact (actions C.1 and C.2) and three communication actions (actions D.1, D.2 and D.3). Finally, the project foresaw the implementation of two actions designed to project monitoring (actions E.1 and E.2). All details about the project's actions are in this Final report.

The aim of this work is to illustrate, simply and effectively, some initiatives carried out under the Blue Lakes Project and, above all, to provide the practical tools being able to be developed in other European areas and, in particular, in those countries where there is a major need to support local initiatives concerning the governance of the decision-making processes on microplastics presence in the inner water.

The informative fact sheet on microplastics in waters gives information on what microplastics are, sources of microplastics, possible effects on lake and wetland ecosystems as well as multi-faced solution approaches on how to reduce microplastic pollution.

Tyre wear generated on roads is partly carried into the surrounding environment with the air or washed away to the roadside with rainwater. In the best case, it is transported via the sewage system to wastewater treatment plants. But even then, there is no guarantee that the particles caught by the filters of the sewage treatment plants do not end up in natural waters.
