The Global Tourism Plastics Initiative for plastic free journeys

The objective is to eliminate plastic packaging by 2025, involving stakeholders in the tourism sector. In this way the United Nations Environment Programme (Unep) and the World Tourism Organisation (Unwto), in collaboration with the Ellen MacArthur Foundation, announced a project to develop the circular economy and promote procurement practices considering the environmental footprint of products and services of a very large and incisive sector. According to the 12th Sustainable Development Objective “Responsible Consumption and Production”, the entire tourism sector, in collaboration with companies, administrations, associations and NGOs, will have to work to eliminate packaging and unnecessary plastic items, to increase the amount of recycled content in all plastic items used and to report on the progress made to achieve these results.
